HINGES FOR GATES

When selecting the right gate hinges, you’ll want to ensure they provide full maintenance, durability, and functionality of the gate and are easy to use.

With a rectangular hinge plate, butt hinges can take a high weight and are non-corrosive. You can also use them outside, thanks to their stainless steel construction and screws.

Designed to withstand hard use and extreme weather, marine hinges are corrosion-resistant making a great gate hinge for use on doors outside such as shed doors, barn doors, or driveways.

"I have been dealing with Cooke Brothers for many years, great products and amazing customer service.

Their rep once delivered goods to my house late on Friday night when we had a rush job Saturday morning, which not a lot of other companies in the industry would do."

How to Choose the Right Gate Hinge?

Materials

The material you are working with will determine how you will secure the gate hinges to the gate and gate post. If, for example, your gate is made of a metal like steel, you might choose a weldable hinge (also known as lift-off) or a screw-fixed hinge. However, with wooden gates, you’ll only be able to use screw-fixed hinges.

Weight

Knowing your gate’s total weight will help you determine the quantity, size and type of hinges you need to avoid hinge failure. If the hinges aren’t the correct size to handle the weight of the gate, long-term usage can cause the hinges to fail.

Hinge Size

The gate width, in particular, will play a key role in determining the strength of the gate hinges, as the wider the gate, the more pressure will be put on the top hinge.

Location and Usage

Consider where the gate is located, as this will determine how the gate is used and how often. For something like a large industrial estate with metal gates or a special delivery entrance, the gate hinges may need to frequently open their gate or keep it open for long periods, and the gate hinge pin will have to take a lot of wear and tear. If large vehicles frequently pass through, the gate will also need to open more than 90 degrees requiring hinges to open this wide.

For the average garden gate, the priority will likely be less about how wide it can open and more about reliability, can stand up to frequent use and won’t seize up quickly. Stainless steel hinges are a great option for a garden gate hinge.
